ECOWAS refutes Niger’s terror allegations against Nigeria

Tchiani claimed that France offered Tinubu financial incentives in exchange for allowing the French military to deploy in Nigeria’s Borno State.

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has categorically dismissed allegations made by Niger Republic, accusing Nigeria of sponsoring terrorism.

The regional bloc labelled the claims as baseless, reaffirming its support for Nigeria’s peacekeeping efforts.

In a statement released Thursday, December 26, ECOWAS emphasised its solidarity with Nigeria.

“The Commission stands firmly with Nigeria and other ECOWAS member states against allegations that they are sponsoring terrorism,” the statement read.

ECOWAS commended Nigeria’s leadership in the fight against terrorism particularly its role in the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF), which has achieved notable successes in ensuring regional stability.

The bloc described Nigeria as a “generous and magnanimous country” that has consistently supported peace in West Africa and the continent as a whole.

The response comes after Niger’s military leader, GeneralAbdourahamane Tchiani, accused Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of colluding with France to destabilise Niger.

Tchiani claimed that France offered Tinubu financial incentives in exchange for the French military to deploy in Nigeria Borno state.

Additionally, Niger alleged that the Lakurawa terrorist group, with the assistance of foreign forces, including Nigeria’s, orchestrated the December 13 attack on the Niger-Benin oil pipeline.

Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has categorically denied the accusations, reaffirming its commitment to peaceful relations with Niger.

This development arises amidst strained ties between Nigeria and Niger, following ECOWAS sanctions and potential military intervention to restore constitutional order after Niger’s 2023 coup.

ECOWAS has urged member states to prioritise dialogue over unsubstantiated claims.
