Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has revealed that his New Year message has resulted in threats to his life and family.
Obi disclosed this in a statement posted on his verified Twitter account on Monday, January 6, 2025.
The former Anambra State governor stated that he has received various messages, including threats directed at him and those close to him.
In his New Year address, Obi highlighted that Nigeria’s economic situation has worsened despite the Federal Government’s claims of improvement. He also described the country as one of the poverty capitals of the world.
He pointed out the displacement of families caused by the activities of bandits and terrorists and described Nigeria as one of the most insecure and least peaceful nations globally.
Obi criticized President Bola Tinubu, urging him to end frequent overseas trips and conduct medical examinations within the country. He stated, “Mr President, out of the approximately 580 days you have been in office, it is reported that you have spent over 30%, or around 180 days, on more than 30 publicly recorded overseas trips.”
In response, Felix Morka, the spokesperson for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), said during an interview on Arise Television that Obi’s persistent criticism of the ruling party and Tinubu’s administration was excessive.
“Peter Obi is really crossing the line; the campaigns are over. He needs to relax and allow his lawyers to handle his case at the tribunal. Accusing the APC of attacking his personal life is ridiculous. Obi has been way too sanctimonious for someone who volunteered to venture into politics and run for the presidency,” Morka remarked.
Reacting to Morka’s comments, Obi questioned how he had crossed the line, resharing the video of his New Year message and inviting Nigerians to identify any inappropriate content.
He wrote: “Have I really crossed the line? I ask the question because my New Year message has now led to threats against my life, my family, and those around me. Felix Morka has even accused me of ‘crossing the line’ and warned of consequences. I urge anyone who believes I’ve overstepped to point it out.”
Despite the threats, Obi affirmed his commitment to truthfully addressing Nigeria’s challenges. He criticized the nation’s drift toward authoritarianism and suppression of free expression, vowing not to be silenced.
