The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed the appointment of Eric Sekou Chelle as the Head Coach of the Super Eagles, Nigeria’s senior men’s football team as reported by All Soccer Nigeria.
This decision follows the recommendation of the NFF’s Technical and Development Sub-Committee and was approved during a meeting of the NFF Executive Committee on January 7, 2025.
Chelle, a former coach of Mali’s national team, brings extensive experience to the role. He earned five caps as a player for Mali and has managed clubs including GS Consolat, FC Martigues, Boulogne, and MC Oran.
Since 2022, he has served as the Head Coach of the Mali national team, leading them to a commendable performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
Under his guidance, Mali narrowly missed a semi-final spot, losing 2-1 to the hosts, Cote d’Ivoire, after extra time.
A former central defender, the 47-year-old Chelle had a notable playing career in France, representing clubs such as Martigues, Valenciennes, Lens, Istres, and Chamois Niortais.
His deep understanding of the game, both as a player and coach, is expected to be pivotal in steering the Super Eagles to success.
Chelle’s appointment takes effect immediately, with a primary objective of securing Nigeria’s qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The next set of qualifiers, Matchdays 5 and 6, are scheduled for March.
